Older West Springfield Homes Need Gutters That Fit

About three out of four homes in West Springfield were built before 1980, and more than a quarter date to before 1940. Many of them still carry gutters that were sized for a different era, or sectional systems with a seam every few feet that has had decades to open up. When those joints leak, water runs behind the gutter and rots the fascia boards and soffits. We replace old systems with seamless aluminum gutters formed on site to the exact length of each roofline, so there are no mid-run seams to fail. On older homes we also check the fascia before we hang anything, because a new gutter is only as solid as the wood it is fastened to.

RIVERS AND RAIN

Built for Connecticut River Valley Weather

West Springfield sits between the Connecticut River on the east and the Westfield River to the south. The town knows what water can do: the 1936 flood displaced about 8,000 residents, and the dikes that protect low-lying neighborhoods were built after it. The valley averages about 45 inches of rain and melted snow a year, and roughly 100 days a year freeze at night and thaw by day, which is how ice dams build up along the eaves. Gutters here need enough capacity for a summer downpour and enough strength to hold ice. We size each system to the roof, set a steady pitch toward every downspout, and use downspouts large enough to empty the gutter instead of backing it up.

LEAVES AND DEBRIS

Gutter Guards for Tree-Lined Streets

Between Mittineague Park, Bear Hole and the older neighborhoods around the Town Common, plenty of West Springfield roofs sit under mature trees. Every fall those leaves land in the gutters, and every winter whatever is left freezes into a dam that pushes water back under the shingles. We install name-brand gutter guards that keep leaves and twigs out while letting rain through, so the gutter keeps draining in a heavy storm. If you would rather keep open gutters, we offer gutter cleaning and repairs on a schedule that suits your trees.

I worked with Mark and had a great experience. He came out to the house personally, which I really appreciated since a few other companies seemed comfortable giving estimates without ever meeting us. He took the time to explain everything clearly without any pressure or upselling...

FAQ

Gutter Questions From West Springfield Homeowners

Where is Custom Gutters located?

Our shop is at 2385 Westfield Street in West Springfield, in the Tatham neighborhood. We are a family-owned company with more than 20 years of experience installing and repairing gutters.

What size gutters does a West Springfield home need?

We install seamless K-style aluminum gutters in 5-inch and 6-inch sizes. Many older homes here came with 5-inch gutters, and larger or steeper roofs often do better with 6-inch. We measure your roof area and pitch during the free estimate and recommend the size that will carry the water, along with the right number and size of downspouts.

How often should gutters be cleaned in West Springfield?

At least twice a year, in late spring and again after the leaves are down in the fall. Homes near Mittineague Park and other wooded areas may need it more often. If cleaning is becoming a chore, gutter guards cut it down to an occasional check.

Do I need a permit to replace gutters in West Springfield?

Under the Massachusetts building code, ordinary repairs do not need a building permit, and gutter replacement on its own is usually treated that way. Roof work is different, so if your project goes beyond the gutters, check with the West Springfield building department or ask us during your estimate.

Do you offer free estimates in West Springfield?

Yes. We come out, look at your roof, gutters and drainage, and give you a free, no-obligation estimate.
